Shiseido to Acquire Bare Escentuals

Posted in News on January 15th, 2010 by Editor – 1 Comment

According to Associate Press reports, Shiseido Co. is seeking to purchase San Francisco-based Bare Escentuals Inc. in a $1.7 billion deal. The acquisition, announced January 15, 2010, is, according the report, Shiseido’s biggest purchase since its founding in 1872 as Japan’s first Western-style pharmacy.

The Tokyo-based company will offer to buy all outstanding stock of Bare Escentuals for $18.20 a share, which represents a 43% premium over its closing price on the Nasdaq Thursday. The transaction was unanimously approved by both boards of directors.

Bare Escentuals, founded in 1994, will operate as a separate division of Shiseido under current chief executive Leslie Blodgett, who is credited with taking Bare Escentuals from a small, niche player to an industry leader and innovator. Partially through her regular appearances on the QVC shopping network and infomercials, sales grew from approximately $8 million in 1999 to $350 million in 2006 and $556 million in 2008.

“This is an exciting day for all of us at Bare Escentuals, and I couldn’t be more pleased to be joining forces with the team at Shiseido,” Blodgett said in a statement. “Together with Shiseido, we look forward to bringing our mineral-based beauty products to even more women worldwide.”

The AP reports that, for Shiseido, the acquisition represents a major step in its bid to expand abroad amid a shrinking home market. The company is Japan’s largest beauty company with operations in more than 70 countries, but global business accounted for only 38% of the company’s $7.5 billion in sales last fiscal year. Its presence in the U.S. remains limited, making up 8% of total revenue.

diane-krugerDiane Kruger Named Global Spokesmodel for L’Oreal

It looks like Diane Kruger is worth it! The German actress, 33, has been named the global spokesmodel for L’Oreal.

“It’s a great honor and a huge pleasure to become a spokesperson for L’Oreal Paris,” Kruger said in a statement Tuesday. She added: “I admire the brand, not only for the quality and innovation of its products, but also because it represents diversity and excellence across the world, values which are very close to my heart. I am, of course, also delighted to be joining the other L’Oreal Paris spokespeople, an extremely talented, widely admired group of people.”

julia-robertsAccording to WWD.com, Julia Roberts, one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, has been tapped as the “global ambassadress” for Lancôme.

“By her remarkable personality and career, Julia Roberts is an emblematic woman of her time,” said Youcef Nabi, president of Lancôme International. “Her exceptional talent, her radiance and her strong commitments perfectly echo Lancôme’s values. We are convinced she will embody the brand in the most sublime way possible.”

Lancôme executives declined to give further details on the relationship between Roberts and the brand, including the amount the actress is being paid to sell the products, the length of her contract and specific duties, saying more would be revealed early next year.

Roberts is the latest in a string of Hollywood A-listers entering the beauty realm — and one of the industry’s biggest “gets” in years. Demi Moore was signed to a similar deal with Lancôme sister brand Helena Rubinstein, as the face of its Wanted fragrance, earlier this year.

Real Housewives post-surgery pics

Posted in News on November 16th, 2009 by Editor – 1 Comment

realhousewivesOC Register reports that post-surgical photos of Lynne Curtin that Bravo TV distributed to promote “Real Housewives of Orange County” were accurate, not fakes, says plastic surgeon Dr. Milind Ambe of Newport Beach.

Ambe performed two cosmetic procedures on her, he said in an interview: an endoscopic brow lift and a lower face and neck lift.

He chuckled at the suggestion in OC Register’s “Plastic surgery tour of Real Housewives” slide show that Bravo’s publicity photo “seems to owe more to the talents of a Photoshop artist than to the skills of her plastic surgeon.”

Photos from Bravo show Curtin before the procedures, left, and after them, right.
